;D Just got back from RRG trip in Kentucky:
This area is awesome, Lots of scenery, Rock scrambling,Archeological sensitive areas, Massive Arches,
I arrived at the Slade exit on Thursday Feb 17th , there you need to buy a pass for each night you stay. $2 bucks a night and you can park at any trail head.
Hiked to Indian Staircase, What an area, Took my breath away. Climbing almost a verticle wall with small indentation in the rock, just enough to place your hand in and toe of your boot. There were 10 hikers on this trip and 2 dogs. The doge need some help up the Staircase, rope pull. At the top of Indian Staircase is a rock outcropping of a Frog Head, and a nome with indian petrigliffs, Might have mispelled that. Any way indian signs were all over the place.
Climbed Half Moon Rock, Gray's Arch, Princess Arch,
Chimmney rocks. Hiked Some of the Cliffty Wilderness Area, Martins Fork Trail, and several other trails.
I will definetly be going back some time in April or May .
I will post a trip plan later. If you do descide to go , be sure and take a camera.
All together I bagged 4 nights and approx 40 miles.
I had contacted the Ranger District there prior asking them for the GPS coordinates to Indian Staircase but they would not give them , telling me it was a sensitive area but not off limits and difficult to find, BUT being from West Virginia, I found It, and will share in the location with others. I'm not saying nobody else knows where it is but The ranger district was not giving me info and all maps do not show it, even TOPOS, and National Geographic maps.
RED RIVER GORGE: If you have never been then you need to go. I have herd this area is crowded in the summer so early spring and late fall is the best.
