It's hard to believe, but I'm actually getting paid to backpack in Pisgah. I work for Phoenix Outdoor Wilderness Therapy Program. ;D life is good

That's amazing. What kind of training or education does one need to work for such an organization?

preference is given to individuals who have some sort of college degree but that's not always the deciding factor. CPR/First Aid is a must. WFA is better. WFR or WEMT is above and beyond the call of duty. experience working with at-risk populations is a big foot in the door. experience with backcountry navigation and what they call "hard skills" (which means that you know what you're doing out in the woods).
degrees and experience aside, it seems that they look most closely at who you are as an individual...all other things can be achieved with time and patience.
it's an awesome line of work...a life changing experience for everyone involved.
