Written by Earl Shaffer, the first to thru-hike the Appalchian Trail in 1948.
It's interesting to read about the trail route back then around the Mt Rogers Area. From Damascus it get on Iron Mtn and follows that to the New River.Somehow it gets to the Blue Ridge Parkway and goes by Mabry Mill. At that time the Blue Ridge Parkway was under construction and he mentions Mabry Mill by the name of The Dale Mabry Mill. He spent the night in a stone shelter at Rocky Knob just a little ways farther north on the parkway. I think that shelter is still there.
I'm still reading this book but so far it's been pretty good.
