I will be out this weekend, heading to Lewis Fork Wilderness in and around Mt.Rogers and Pine Mountain, Highest and 3rd highest mountain in Virginia. Plan is to leave after work, and yep? I do work!!!!! I plan on driving to Scales around 5 pm friday April 8th. Scales is an area top of Pine Mountain you can drive too by driving south Interstate 81 or north 81 and take exit 45 and head east along rt 16 to Troutdale Va, From here you take a right just west of Troutdale on rt 603 and keep driving for several miles until you see a horse campground on the right side of the road. Actually the dirt road to scales is just before the Horse campground. The dirt road is on the left side of rt 603. A wooden sign will be posted there saying off road vehicles permitted only. This road is actually very well maintained and gravel all the way to Scales top of Pine Mt. If while driving on rt 603 you do come to a campground called Grindstone , you have driven too far. Turn around and head back looking for the horse campground now on your left and scales dirt road on the right just past the Horse campground. Note! The dirt road to scales is not marked Scales. Follow dirt road for some 6 miles up the mountain , It takes me approx 20 to 25 minutes to drive easily along the road. I have driven my family car there before so the road is well maintained. If interested in a friday night and saturday night out near wilburs ridge please e mail me at refrigeratorkid@wmconnect.com or at this forum. The views there are breathtaking and wild ponies will be there as well.
