On Sunday April 3rd, I'm leading a dayhike acorss Peters Mtn on the Va/Wva border. This will be about 15 1/2 miles. We'll stop by the Hanging Rock Hawk Observatory. The last 3 miles will be on the AT ending at the parking lot below the Pine Swamp shelter. If anyone is in the neighborhood, feel free to join us, just let me know. Leaving Roanoke at 6am to start hiking around 7:30. This is an RATC event. Refrigerator, this is not too far from Mt Rogers and you may be even closer.

Ever heard about the strange moaning of the wind moving across Peter's Mountain?
Quite a view from up there.

I've read something about that on the Hanging Rock Hawk Observatory website I believe. I've been lucky in that the times I've been across there the winds were slight. But I have half-way froze to death backpacking across it in April. I thought it was spring time....wrong That mtn has brought both pain and pleasure to me. But yeah, it is a nice place.

We had to cancel this hike due the hurricane like winds on that day. We've rescheduled this hike for Sunday April 24th. Some of us will be meeting in Roanoke at 7am and we'll be making a quick stop in Blacksburg to pick up some more and we should be at the trail head atop Peters Mtn between 8:30 and 9AM.
The leaves should still be off the trees on the ridgeline allowing for good views all day.
We had 9 signed up for this before the Hurricane hit.
Let me know if anyone is interested. Thanks.

You'll be having too much fun in the Smokies. How many 6000 ft peaks are there in that area. I think I've heard there's around 40 of them. I think you can get a certificate for doing them all. I belive the Eastman Carolina Club keeps up with this. We're have to go down there and knock out a few.

We had a good hike on Sunday. Temps were around freezing, the wind was blowing and it snowed on us all day. Started hiking at 9:30 and finished at 5. Est mileage of !5 miles was about right. We only came across one other hiker and that was a thru hiker at the Pine Swamp shelter. On the way back to Roanoke we went to Paint Bank and checked out the Buffalo's at the Buffalo farm. There was six of us and they all seemed to have a good time.
I have some pics in my Snapfish account. I'll have to try to link up to it.

Nice pics, Thanks for sharing. I was up your way the past couple of weekends. I had the biggest Hamburger I have ever seen, a place called attitudes in Blacksburg VA. 3 1/4 lbs of beef and the burger was 8 inches in dia. If you can eat it in 7 minutes it was free and a free T shirt as well. I never did try it . I wanted to enjoy the meal.
Hope to see you on the trail again.
