Scales in Virginia. RT 603 from Troutdale Va, MtRogers Just north of Grindstone campground on 603 past the horse camp ground you will see a dirt road on the right. Take this approx 3 miles up the mountain , several switch backs and then cross a cattle gate to a field called scales. Here the At trail crosses and you can day hike in all directions and pick Huckleberries. Early Sept is the best time to pick.
Wild ponies are everywhere this time of the year also but they don't mind sharing in the bounty.
You can also camp out here at Scales with a nice PRIVY and plenty of water.
