The folks at antigravitygear came up with a novel idea of mapdanas for the Appalachian Trail.

I believe you could do the same with a fine point Sharpie Marker and a plain piece of hemmed fabric. You could transcribe all the necessary data for an upcoming trip onto the bandana. It would be multi-functional, lightwieght, and a water impartial piece of gear.
