I'm becoming interested in different fire sources. The bow-drill is an awesome way to get back to the basics. But in damp conditions the magnesium fire starter is a good option.
magnesium fire starter instructions: 1 Use a sharp knife held at 90 degrees to the magnesium block to pare a small (quarter sized) pile of shavings. 2 Gather tinder in a pile adjoining the shavings. 3 Scrape the length of the sparking insert toward the pile of shavings. 4 The magnesium shavings will burn rapidly but the extreme heat will ignite even damp tinder.

I purchased my first magnesium fire starter from Campmor last year and it really works. I carry it with me on every outing now.

Note: Do not give a flints and steels to a bunch of boy scouts hopped up on sugar and caffiene armed with bug spray. The results.....well.... they're not pretty.
