"Find a Sassafras tree and dig up a piece of root. Wash it off. Put it in a pot with boiling water until the water turns to a burgandy color. Take roots out and let the water cool off, then serve."
I like to add a little sugar. The Sassafras tree is abundant in WV and I have seen it in SC. It's very easy to identify by it's differently lobed leaves and by it's distinct taste when chewing on a stem.
However, it was determined to be carcinogenic by the FDA in 1960.
